The jewellery & accessories buying guide
Good product information makes it easier to choose something you will enjoy wearing. Use this guide alongside the photos and description of the specific item. Measurements, materials, colours and availability vary by product.
Choosing earrings
Start with the way you plan to wear them. Studs sit close to the ear, hoops frame the face and drops add movement. Read the stated length or diameter and compare it with a pair you already own. Close-up images can make a small design look much larger.
- Check dimensions, fastening type and weight where provided.
- Read the materials and plating description, including the earring post.
- Check what is included: a pair, a single earring or a set.
- For a gift, establish whether the recipient has pierced ears.
Do not assume that costume jewellery is hypoallergenic or nickel-free. Ask for clarification if you need a particular material specification. Read our everyday earring guide for styling ideas.
Measuring for bracelets and bangles
Measure around your wrist with a flexible tape, without pulling it tight. If you use a strip of paper instead, mark the meeting point and measure it with a ruler. Compare the result with the listing and with a bracelet that feels comfortable.
A wrist measurement is not the same as a finished bracelet length. The thickness of the design and your preferred amount of movement affect the fit. Check whether the measurement includes the clasp, and whether an extension is included. For a rigid bangle, check the internal dimensions and whether it can pass over your hand.
“Adjustable” does not mean one size fits everyone. Ask for the minimum and maximum fit if it is not stated. See bracelet sizing and stacking for more help.
Choosing a necklace length
Use a soft tape or a piece of string to picture the stated necklace length on yourself. Compare it with a necklace you already wear, and take your neckline into account. A pendant can add extra drop below the chain, so check its dimensions separately.
Look for the clasp type, chain length, extension length and pendant size. A necklace on a model is a styling reference rather than a guarantee of where it will sit on you. Check whether a photographed matching piece is included or sold separately.
Choosing a handbag that fits your essentials
Lay out the items you normally carry and compare the bag with one you already own. Read width, height and depth together. External dimensions do not guarantee the same internal capacity: the opening, lining, dividers and shape all affect usable space.
- Check dimensions and the order in which they are listed.
- Confirm the handle drop and any shoulder or crossbody strap measurements.
- Check whether straps are adjustable or detachable.
- Read the material, closure and compartment information.
- Look through colour photos, the size guide and any image showing the bag being held.
Black, navy and grey can look different across screens and lighting. Confirm the actual available colour before ordering. A gallery showing several colours is not a colour selection for your order. If no colour selector is offered, contact us to confirm the option before paying.
Do not infer leather, a designer brand or a particular capacity from a photograph. Our handbag size and colour guide explains what to compare. Browse handbags currently listed.
Checking sunglasses before buying
Read the frame and lens information for the specific pair. Compare lens width, bridge width and arm length with a pair that already fits. Check side views and the stated frame colour.
Do not assume UV protection from dark lenses or styling. Only rely on a UV rating, polarisation or other technical claim when the listing confirms it for that product. If information is absent, ask before buying. Confirm whether a case or cloth is included rather than relying on props in a photograph.
See our sunglasses guide and current availability.
Understanding materials and caring for your purchase
“Gold-tone” and “silver-tone” describe appearance and do not mean solid precious metal. Read the actual material description, including plating, stones and decorative components. Do not assume an item is waterproof, sterling silver, solid gold or suitable for sensitive skin unless the listing explicitly says so.
Follow the supplied care instructions. For costume jewellery, a gentle wipe with a soft dry cloth and separate dry storage are sensible starting points. Remove pieces before bathing, swimming, exercise and household cleaning. Avoid soaking and abrasive cleaners unless specifically recommended for the item.
For bags and sunglasses, use the care instructions for their materials. Do not apply a jewellery cleaning method to another accessory. Read our costume jewellery care article.
Gifts, budgets and delivery timing
Choose for the recipient’s usual style, preferred finish and fit. Check the current price rather than assuming all items are under £10. Sale prices and stock can change. Gift wrapping, boxes and personalisation are included only where stated.
We offer free tracked UK delivery with an estimated arrival time of approximately 10–14 days. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed date. Allow extra time for a fixed occasion and check the delivery and returns page before ordering. PayPal Buyer Protection applies to eligible purchases under PayPal’s terms.
