How to care for costume jewellery

Costume jewellery can include plated metal, beads, imitation stones, glued details and other decorative finishes. The safest care routine starts with the material and care instructions on the individual product.

Put jewellery on after getting ready

Let perfume, moisturiser, hair products and other cosmetics dry before adding your jewellery. Remove pieces before showering, swimming, exercising or doing household cleaning. Water, sweat and cleaning products can affect finishes and decorative components.

A gold-tone or silver-tone finish describes an appearance. It does not establish that the piece is solid precious metal, waterproof or suitable for an ultrasonic cleaner.

Clean gently

After wearing, gently wipe the piece with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid soaking, scrubbing and abrasive polishing products unless the product instructions specifically allow them. Take extra care around glued stones and delicate settings, where pressure or moisture may cause damage.

If you are unsure what a piece is made from, ask before using a specialist cleaning product. A method intended for solid silver may be unsuitable for a plated finish or imitation stones.

Store pieces separately

Keep jewellery in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Separate necklaces to reduce tangling and avoid leaving bracelets or earrings where they can rub against harder pieces. A soft pouch or divided box can help organise a small collection.

Check clasps and earring backs before wearing. If a part appears loose or damaged, stop wearing it until you can assess the issue. No care routine can guarantee that a decorative finish will last indefinitely; wear, storage and individual use all matter.
