How to choose earrings you will actually wear
The best everyday earrings work with your routine as well as your wardrobe. Before choosing a pair, think about how long you normally wear earrings, whether you prefer a subtle finish or a statement, and which fastenings you find easiest to use.
Start with shape and scale
Studs sit close to the ear and can be an easy finishing touch for a shirt, knit or simple dress. Hoops frame the face; a small hoop and a large hoop can feel very different, even in the same finish. Drop earrings add movement and are useful when you want the jewellery to be a focal point.
Check the measurements in the listing rather than judging by a close-up photograph. Use a ruler to picture the stated length or diameter beside your ear. Where weight is listed, consider it alongside size: a larger design is not automatically heavier, and comfort is personal.
Check the fastening and materials
Look for the fastening type and decide whether it suits you. Butterfly backs, hooks and hinged hoops have different handling requirements. Read the material description carefully, including any plating. A colour such as gold-tone describes appearance; it does not mean solid gold.
If you know you react to a particular material, ask for clarification before ordering. Do not assume that costume jewellery is nickel-free or hypoallergenic unless the individual listing confirms it.
Make styling easy
Try keeping one element consistent: the metal colour, an accent colour or the scale of the jewellery. With a detailed neckline, smaller earrings may be easier to balance. With a plain top, a more expressive pair can do the work.
